beach scene using iris folding

Irene, from Southeastern Connecticut in the US, completed this 'Memories of Summer' scene. She has been having problems with her scanner so she snail-mailed the photo along with this information about how she completed her project:

" I read your summer challenge introduction and copied all 10 patterns. At this point, I did not read your explanation of how you completed your summer scene. I wanted to figure out the rest on my own.

My supply list is as follows:

  • 2- 12X12 white card stock
  • Different colors of craft tissue paper
  • Brown paper bags - one dark color one lighter color
  • Metallic paper to match the tissue paper
  • Stamp pads - two different blues, brown and red
  • White computer paper
  • Glue

I cut out all the patterns. I wanted the lighthouse on a ledge. This limited my amount of patterns used to the six. I made the rocky ledge. Then, I arranged the other patterns until I was satisfied with the size of and placement of the pieces. The rocks use the darker brown. They are shaded with brown ink.

I next constructed my backgrounds starting with the sky. I layered blue first, pink second, then the purple. After that I did the water. The first layer is purple, then the same blue as the first layer of the sky-over the purple.

I replaced my patterns, including the ledge, putting them back to the arrangement I chose before. I did this to double check my decision before making any cuts. Looking at it again, I decided I wanted to change the size of some of the patterns. Your instructions gave no limitations or exceptions so I felt this was OK.

    My changes were:
  • Clouds - no change
  • Lighthouse - I made taller, just a bit, by hand
  • Sun - smaller using a scanner
  • Dolphins - three different smaller sizes by scanner
  • Sailboat - slightly smaller by scanner
  • Starfish - a little smaller by scanner
  • Seagulls - smaller by scanner

I was nervous about making my cuts. To be sure I was proceeding correctly, I checked your web site and read your instructions. Feeling more confident, I made my first cut putting the lighthouse on the ledge(phew, that first cut was the hardest). I then cut the clouds, followed by the sun, the boat and the dolphins.

The iris folding was done as follows:
  • Clouds- color one: white, color two: white with black tucked inside
  • Sun - orange, gold, and yellow
  • Dolphins - blue, I then inked the folded edges using a stamp pad to give them more definition
  • Boat - red, white, and blue - I used three folded layers of white to make sure the blue and red would not show through. The red mast and the boat were cut from brown paper and then inked with red.
  • Lighthouse- The light was done in yellow. The rest was done in red and white. Again, I use several layers of white so the red would not show through. I then inked the edges of the white with a blue stamp pad.
  • The iris of each pattern was completed with matching metallic paper.

Finally, I added the birds using white computer paper. The starfish was completed using gold tissue paper backed with white computer paper. The finished size of my project is 19" x 12" ."

She also added that this was only her second iris folding project, the first being a greeting card using a simple square pattern.
