Now you can trace the iris folding patterns on the back of the poster board and cut out the apertures. You can use carbon paper to trace the patterns or just carefully cut out the patterns and trace around them that way:

Use a cutting mat and craft or small razor knife to cut out the apertures:

At this point we started to wonder if our white poster board would be visible between the layers of the background and the iris folding. To be safe, on the front side of our poster board, we used water based paints to trace around all the openings. Where the brown land would be, we made a brown border, where the blue water would be, we painted a blue border... It turned out later that this was not really needed for it's original purpose, but it gave us some nice stiff edges to work with:

We then started ripping the beautiful paper we had purchased for the background into little pieces. The pieces were glued down with a permanent glue stick, one by one:
